That Old Chinese Man at Town Hall... UNLEASHED
September 16th 2006 02:26
Walking around the city the other day, I noticed Mr Sunshine in his usual post doing his usual job. Fortunately, I was with my Chinese friend so I put 2 and 2 together and I actually got an INTERVIEW with Mr. Sunshine.... and 4.
Unfortunately my Chinese friend was doing the interview so she didn't ask the questions I would have asked something like "Who's your favourite Veronica?" or "What do you think are the origins of the expression "cold turkey"?". So I only got a tiny interview and he was SO nice!
As soon as my friend spoke to him he had a huge smile even though he had fake teeth, he really was Mr Sunshine! He was so chipper in fact, his new ironic nickname will have to be Senor Despondency.
Q: Do you speak Chinese?
A: Yes
Q: This is my friend by the way (refering to me)
(MrS waves with a bigger smile)
Q: What's your name?
A: Mao Qing (pronounced like Mao Ching)
Q: Where do you come from?
A: A city near Shanghai
Q: So how much do you make?
A: About $100 per day during Christmas and $30-$40 per day otherwise.
Q: Why do you do this?
A: I'm not poor or homeless. I have nothing else to do. I don't want to sit at home, so I come here.
That's such a romantic reason! He's my Australian of the year and he's way better than that guy at Wynyard with the guitar who swears at everyone. I gave Mr Sunshine $2 and the world got a little bit brighter. Maybe because it was a super-shiny 2005 $2 coin or maybe because of some tragic Hallmark reason.
So the next time you see Mao Qing, give him some money, a smile or even sing along.
What else should my friend have asked Mr Sunshine? Add a comment...

I always wanted to go up to him and ask him if he could teach me to play erhu. If I was going to suggest a question, it'd thus be, does he take students?
