Stupid Sydney Shop Names

September 12th 2006 00:01
Imagine you're life long dream of opening a shoe shop is about to come true. You think of all the possible names and then one day you walk past a daycare centre and you hear someone mispronounce supermarket. "EUREEKA" you scream, as you run around telling all your friends with a straight face about how you've just taken a massive loan for your "Shoepermarket" (in Bondi Junction).

Well it's all true.

get it? GET IT?

So what are some other stupid/brilliant shop names in Sydney?

The man on the go doesn't want to have to wonder what they sell inside a shop. I mean Just Jeans sells more than just jeans and you can get "Calvin Klein Jeans" written on a shirt. Not to mention Gloria Jeans sells coffee. So thankfully, this shop at Central makes it all nice and simple.

Is there a Mrs Jeans? *wink wink*

-----------------

There used to be sewing shop called "Matt-man and Bobin".. now closed down.

Other sightings include "The Cut Above" = Hairdresser
"The Growing Concern" = Maternity Shop

-----------------

If Sex and the City has imparted one thing into the world, it's lame puns. Like the creators of this shop title for second hand books...

"Texts In The City"

It sells second hand text books, let's hope the reason why they're second hand is nothing to do with Samantha.

-----------------

Adjectives are so overused in today's modern world.

Admit it though, are you going to go to some bleh "Convenience Shop" or "The Nice One". Exactly.

-----------------

Thai restaurants are haven for awesome shop names. Oops, typo, I meant Thai restaurant haven't an awesome shop name EVER.

They love their puns... here are some examples or REAL thai restaurant names

Thai Times Nine (Newtown)
Three Times Thai (Mosman)
Bow Thai (Neutral Bay)
Fat Boy's Thai (East Sydney)
High Thai (Coogee)
The Thai is High (Beecroft)
Inter Thai (Newtown)
Thai & I (Dee Why)
Why Thai Cafe (Surry Hills)
Thaicoon (Eastwood)

There are many more options.. like Thai Phoid or Thai Me Up or Michael Thai-son...

What are some other shops you know of? What would you call a Thai restaurant? Add a comment...

It's not in Sydney, but a hair salon name that always made me snigger was Hair Police in Amsterdam .

I've heard there's a pet shop in Sydney trying to make a pun off "The Real McCoy" with "The Real Macaw Pet Superstore."
Talk about stretching it thin.

Just digressing slightly there was a great caption/catchphrase for a firm of Indian builders I heard of recently

"Now you've dealt with the cowboys, try the indians"

Brilliant !!!!!

ha ha i love texts in the city that made me chuckle.Even a name like that won't make text books hot!
I was shocked to see 'Little lamb's hot pot' in china town, such a cute name with a happy little lamb skipping in a meadow on the sign.
Really puts you off eating the lamb hot pot they serve there.

Oh, man. We've got loads of shops with stupid-but-funny names back home in the Philippines. The ones I can remember are:

Wash Up, Doc? (laundry place)
Christopher Plumbing (um, plumber)
Petal Attraction (flower shop)
Felix The Cut (barber shop)
Doris Day and Night (24-hour restaurant)
Bread Pitt (bakery)
Curl Up and Dye (beauty parlor)
and my favorite: LBM Restaurant

One of my favourite shop names is 'Curl Up and Dye' for a hairdressing salon on the Central Coast, NSW.

I think the dumbest ever shop name I've seen is a Hair Salon by the name of 'HAIRTASTIC'. What is this supposed to mean? That's like naming a Sporting Goods Store: SPORTRIFFIC. If you're going to go the corny shop name at least try and dazzle us with your wit!

For "texts in the city", I think it only opens close to semester start dates for uni schedules. After that is disappears!

there's a chinese women's fashion shop in chinatown called 'Morning Glory'. The direct translation in Chinese makes sense, but whenever I pass it, I can't help but laugh.

LOL being a fellow Sydneysider, I have seen some pretty far-out ones. Whilst reading your post, I was trying to think of the ones I've seen but none seem to come to mind!! Will definitely re-comment once I come up w/ some.

There's a restaurant in Parramatta called "Punjabi Indian Restaurant"...also "Jolly Good" (although it's near The Entrance)....

Newtown is home to a lot of shops with really stupid "ironic" names, but unfortunately not many come to mind, other than 'The New Wok In Town', which is only mildly lame.

Then we've got 'Thai Me Up' on Oxford Street.

And there's a 'Hairport' here in Fairfield, as well as a fruit shop called 'The Rainbow Fruit Bowl', which I secretly suspect doubles as a gay bar when the clock hits midnight, and my personal favourite..

Who cares about shop names? Compared to other cities in Australia such as Brisbane or Melbourne, the names of shops in Sydney are unique and unusual, which is refreshing.

to Cibbuano :

Correction to ur lack of knowledge-

'Morning Glory' is a Korean Accessory Shop, not a Chinese fashion shop

Not everything in Chinatown is Chinese
