Girls In The Men's Room & More Androgyny
September 15th 2006 02:15
Today, I and my doe-eyed chastity were innocently wandering into the toilets at Fisher library of Sydney University. I opened the door and turned the corner only to see long flowing blonde hair, tied in a pony tail. "Crivens!" I thought in a British accent, "Did I wander into the girl's bathroom?"
My brain synapses were in overload as it occurred to me that this girl was standing in front of a urinal. Ay?
Fortunately I then saw the facial hair on her face and it was actually an arts boy. A breathed a sigh of relief but then realised what air I was breathing in.
So why do these boys have such long hair? I don't have anything against it, I just want to know.
Is it a daring subversion of gender roles? A bohemian declaration of slovenliness? A fear of scissors? They can’t possibly think it’s unique and unconventional to have long hair, can they? It’s just like a university cliché these days. The stinky hairy environmentalist student.
I mean, it makes sense, now there’s a whole new range of products at Priceline they can use. Although by the looks of some of them, they probably think “Pantene” is an anti-youth slogan. Maybe secretly, these boys have long desired to play with their hair and now university is their first chance to acceptably have long hair.
And their hair bands… do they have a “Hair Bands FOR MEN” range or they just buy the female ones? Maybe they want that floating/flowing feeling of dancing hair when they swim or go through wind tunnels? Do they want that exaggerated feeling of being a music video in front a wind machine that badly? Is Jesus their idol?
These are just the long-haired ones at university I’m talking about, don’t get me started on the emo-freaks in front of Town Hall steps.
So what do you think of uni boys with long hair? Do you find them attractive? Are you one? Add a comment…

To be in a band its generally considered you either have to be talented, otherwise, you have to have one of two things - have long hair or facial hair. If you don't, then your position will always be fraught with possibilities of redundancy in the band. Predominately this occurs in metal bands and some rock, which guys usually gravitate to.
To a lesser extent they may be trying to look like a film character or just trying to be individual and as you say, "a daring subversion of gender roles".
I don't have long hair anymore and coincidently don't play in any bands these days.

I think it's just experimental, they don't have parents telling them to do this or that so they are free to do whatever they want.

Long hair can be a pain. It has killer instincts. I remember waking up with my long hair twisted around my neck like a python.

It's obvious why these uni guys have long hair: Laura Gissara has sent a forwarded email to all the members in her fan club and asked them to show their support for her by growing their hair long -- just like her!!!
The other explanation is they're trying to keep up with the stereotype of uni students being poor and having no money, and therefore not being able to afford a mere haircut.

I eventually cut my hair after some little boy came up to me in the video store and said "Hey lady, look what I've got!" while holding up a Lion King DVD. He ran away when he realised I was a dude but that's definitely when I realised it was time to cut my hair.
