Australian Idol Semi - Plodding Karaoke At Its Meh-st
August 27th 2006 11:25
The human voice is capable of amazing things and tonight's episode of Australian Idol... went from 7:30 - 8:30.
The singers brought it all to the table but nobody was hungry. Not to mention the variety of adjectives in Andrew G’s voiceovers went from bad to bad.
Chris Murphy sang “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” even though he’s never even heard of that crazy little invention called scissors. His angry eyebrows and flowing chestnut locks left me confused and uncomfortable.
It's a new Idol stage from last year and thanks to the 12 year old boy from the 80s playing Arcade games behind the scenes to supply the background graphics.
Chris was competent but I can barely remember him singing and I’m writing this as he sings. At the end, his tiny “plums in sunken yogurt” eyes tried their best to look meaningfully into the camera but failed.
Nathanial Willemse sang a slowed down version of U2’s "Vertigo", with the real instruments replaced by 8-bit karaoke midi.
It’s nice to have a singer who can walk and talk, but when Nathaniel got out of his chair his pitch went to pieces. He wasn’t that bad overall, he has a nice voice and as Marcia says “You sang it with respect”, I too noticed his lack of racial prejudice and jokes about “short feet” amid his performance.
At the end, Kyle says “You’ve got a great personality” to which he replies “Wh-“, I see what Kyle means.
Paul Verkoe did something to “Hanging By A Moment” but her certainly didn't sing it. Here Idol turned into “Morning with Kerri-Ann”, it was a jolly "number"
Marcia says with dramatic hand movements “You did your best and the proud eagle call strikes fear into her pray but assures her children of safety in the desert plains. Ohhh waayyyy ohhh”
Damien Leith. The Irishman. He’ll make through based on having the most identifiable tag-name.
He sings “You Are So Beautiful” and the 90 year old Euchre-player in me thinks it’s beautiful. Halfway through the song he does a dramatic crouching gesture like he’s about to transform into the Japanese manga creature.
Mark Holden said some gibberish about it while gumming his own dentures.
I like Daniel but his falsetto gimmick may get old soon.
Brendon Boney gets A for song choice of “Higher Ground” but someone attach a snorkel to his colossal nose because his voice was drowned out.
Then he thrusts towards his own family "by accident" with the reason of “they weren’t there in dress rehearsal”. Effectively he admits that he had memorized the movements of his performance which is POOR.
His interview with James is embarrassing as he stutters repeatedly while James stares with his gnomey eyes. Poor kitten has suffered enough.
Dean Geyer... he’ll do, I have trouble forming an opinion about him. He’ll probably make it through and come about 5th. I wish they wouldn’t sing the same songs all the time. I want to hear someone sing Bjork’s “Cocoon” or play the spoons or something.
---
Overall maybe Australia's population is too small to support 4 seasons of Idol, so far Jorge Bec has been the highlight. Hopefully the other contestants will be able to lift the show out of blegh and into bleh.
What do you think? The best batch yet or flounders in our shallow talent pool

Yeah, it was pretty lame. I don't like all the guys together. It makes for a very dull show. Let's hope the girls bring it or at least play the spoons.

Tonight's girls were really boring imo. No one stood out except for the last girl, Reigan? The other girl, someone Mauboy, has a great voice but would only turn into a cookie cut-out Whitney singer.
